  1. Social status is the position an individual occupies.  A position may or may not carry prestige.

    Ascribed Status is a status you inherit at birth.  You do not get to choose or have any say in your status.

    Achieved Status is a status that you earn or accomplish.  You usually do have a choice or say in this type of status.

    Master status is one that cuts across all other statuses you hold. It is what you are predominantly known for.

    Some master statuses are ascribed and others are achieved

    We have social status and a master status.  It is really irrelevant to ask "which one do you fall under." because we all have these.  For example, part of my ascribed status is being born a female and part of my achieved status is being a college graduate.  My master status may be being a woman in area of work where men dominate the field.  

    Everyone's social status and master status may be different based upon their overall social identity. I hope this helps.
