What are store detectives or loss prevention officers?

Is being a loss prevention or store detective=plain clothes in a department stores a good job? what do they do, are they security officers. give some detail please about this. And if i have experience in security and have a guard card is that all you need or do i need a special cert?

  1. The requirements are established by the retailer.

    Generally, a security guard wears a uniform so he is a visible deterrent. Loss prevention personnel wear street clothes so they do not stick out.

    Loss prevention duties include apprehending shoplifters and investigating internal thefts. They monitor security cameras, and walk the floors acting like any other shopper.

    Both can legally detain you until police arrive is they observe you shoplifting, and the can order you to leave the store if you are disturbing other shoppers.


  2. You watch for customer and employee thefts on store cameras, then call the real police and they do the rest of the work.
