  1. Its free website, its like your website is

    http://www.whatever.com

    Sub Domain is ( http://www.master.whatever.com)

  2. A subdomain is a name that has some word and dot prefix (like www, ftp, mail) in front of your domain name.  For example www.yahoo.com, answers.yahoo.com finance.yahoo.com, etc. are subdomains of yahoo.com domain.

Uses for subdomains might be different applications, different websites, or different virtual web hosts on the same server with different content.

  3. It's a domain within a domain. The only difference is that the subdomain entry is tied to the corresponding domain name. Subdomains are simply used to organize information with a website. An excellent example of a site that uses subdomains for this purpose is About.com. If you visit their site, you will notice that they use different subdomains for all of the topics they cover (IE., "antiques.about.com" and "autorepair.about.com").

Subdomains are sometimes used to identify individual computers, each having an IP address of its own. In that case, the term "machine name" is sometimes used instead of "subdomain". A company  could have two servers called  "marketing.yourfirm.com"and "accounting.yourfirm.com", for example. The two computers would serve different departments, and contain different information.

It's also possible to have multiple subdomains that identify different computers containing the same information. This arrangement is often used for high traffic sites. A visitor types in: "www.hightraffic.com", and it would send the visitor to an available computer(say, "www2.hightraffic.com" or "www7.hightraffic.com").

    Hope this helps.
