  1. Cramped, small, with lots of stuff put wherever it can be fit. In the Forward Compartment the walls are panelled with a fake wood looking stuff, and the rest of the walls and overhead is light green (Sea Foam green). The decks are tiled, and the metal at deck level is grey. Passageways are not big enough for two people to walk past eash other, the slide by each other front to back or such. Lots of Machinery in the lower levels, lots of computers in the upper level. The middle level is mainly berthing and the Crews Mess and Wardroom.

  2. very cramped. you'll be good friends with anyone there with you because there's not a lot of places to move.

  3. dry. If wet, it's time to panic.

  4. The last place in the world for the homophobic or claustrophobic. No interior designer involved in the decor, it's  as attractive as the underside of a car's bonnet.

  5. I was aboard a ww2 sub at Patriots Point in Florida a few years ago. It was very smelly from the diesel fuel and batterys. Very cramped as well and pipes and valves all over. I didnt stay very long. It was too cramped for me. Guess i was made for sail boats etc out in the open!! I fly and it doesnt bother me, at least i can see out. I guess the silent service is not for this guy!!

  6. The newer nuke boats are quite nice, much much better than the old deisel boats.

I have never been in one but there is a good program on the History channel awhile back, they are quite clean, have adequate ventilation and lighting, surprising room, the Navy has always fed its submariners very well, even in WWII days.

I remember reading aboutr more than one sub that had ice cream makers and would carry steaks to sea for the crew as long as they could be kept fresh.

There are a number of excellent movies about WWII boats, U571 comes to mind, they give you a good idea of how they were.

Funny thing about submariners, they almost always felt more vulnerable in surface actions than submerged, I would be absolutely in panic mode, but they are a very special breed of cat.

  7. Smelly, dark, crowded.
