In Europe, what are subways called? not the restaurant, the underground metro things. What are they called in Europe? please help! I'm writing a book.

London - the "tube" or the "underground".  A "subway" in London is usually a pedestrian tunnel under a road.  

Paris - "Metro"

Moscow -"Metro"

It depends on the country - in England, it's called the Tube.  In Italy, it's called the Metropolitana.  In Germany, it's called the S-bahn.  Lots of other countries just call it the Metro.

The underground railways in Europe are called different things in different countries.

But most countries accept 'metro' rather than 'subway' (that is rather American).

In Paris it is called the metro

London: the tube or the underground

glasgow: SPT subway

Tyne and Wear: The Metro

(The tube, The Metro and the SPT subway are the only underground railways in Britain!)

In Barcelona: Metro de barcelona (spanish name)

My best friend is from England and she always calls the subway-the tube.  I didn't know what she was talking about at first.
