What are a human's tears made up of. Is it just salty water?

  2. Tears aren't just salty water...tears are made of tear film, a microscopically three-layered structure.

    Each tear has three layers: an inner layer of mucus, a middle layer of proper water, and an outer layer of fatty substances called meibum.

    Below is a link to an awesome read on the discovery of meibum,  which is a class of fatty substance previously only known in the brain, where it induces sleep.

  3. Your brain sends signals to your optic nerve causing the macula to gather salty water that is released (much like a super-soaker) by the Iris. Heart-break, sad movies, pinching, intense laughter, etc. are common causes of tears
