  1. Simply put, they're made of repeat nucleotide sequences.

    Interestingly, telomeres are shortened at every chromosomal replication (has to do with needing a primer sequence to initiate replication).  Scientists predict that elongating these telomeres will decrease the rate of aging, ostensibly because it prevents the eventual erosion of coding genetic regions when the telomeres are no longer on the chromosome.


  2. A telomere is a repeating DNA sequence (TTAGGG) at the end of the body's chromosomes. The telomere can reach a length of 15,000 base pairs. Telomeres function by preventing chromosomes from losing base pair sequences at their ends. They also stop chromosomes from fusing to each other
