  1. There is actually a 3rd, but is not very common although they are seen in the UK. It is called the Dunlop valve. Horrible little thing.

Sooo, there is presta, schraeder, and dunlop.

  2. Presta:  thin, with a round gripped nut on top that should be threaded down so as to ensure that the valve can not be depressed on accident.

Schrader: for simplicity sake 'car type' .  The valves on these can also be removed with a special tool, some valve caps have them built in.

They make brass adapters that spin onto the Presta valves to make them usable with Schrader pumps.

  3. presta and schraeder. presta valves are were developed as rims became too narrow to bore out a hole for the schraeder valves. as alloys have developed, it is actually possible to bore larger holes, but at this stage it's pretty pointless to keep switching. the end result is you tend to see presta valves on mid to high-end bikes, and schraeder on entry to bottom-end bikes.

  4. The skinny valve that has a s***w top that you must open to inflate is called a "Presta" valve.

The fat valve, like you find on a car, is a "Schrader" valve.

    Hope this helps.

  5. One is called presta which you tend to find on road bikes and I just call the other a car type valve but there's probably a specific name for it.

  6. the other is called Schrader.

I'll never forget how my friend analogized it:  using Schrader valves is the equivalent to wearing an Argyle sweater around town.  "You don't wear Argyle sweaters anymore do you?" he asked.

    I use Presta.
