  1. There are PRIMARY, SECONDARY and TERTIARY alcohols. These depend on the position of the -OH in the alcohol structure. There are chemical differences between alcohols in the three groups.

    Primary alcohols are alcohols in which the carbon carrying the -OH group is only attached to one alkyl group (generally represented by an R)

    E.g Ethanol, propan-1-ol.

    Secondary alcohols are alcohols in which the carbon carrying the -OH group is attached to two alkyl group (generally represented by an R) which may be the same or different

    E.g Propan-2-ol, butan-2-ol

    Tertiary alcohols are alcohols in which the carbon carrying the -OH group is attached to three alkyl group (generally represented by an R) which may be the combination of same or different.

    E.g 2methylpropan-2-ol
