  1. - Kazakhstan

    - Ukraine

    - Turkmenistan

    - Uzbekistan

    - White Russian/Belarus

    - Kyrgyzstan

    - Tajikistan

    - Azerbaijan

    - Georgia

    - Lithuania

    - Latvia

    - Estonia

    - Moldova

    - Armenia

  2. There are 15 nations that gained independence when the USSR collapsed; I'm not sure where you're getting "9 new nations".  They are:

    Russia

Belarus (which, strangely enough, is talking to Russia about possible unification)

    Moldova

    Ukraine

    Armenia

    Azerbaijan

    Georgia

    Kazakhstan

    Turkmenistan

    Kyrgyzstan

    Tajikistan

    Uzbekistan

    Latvia

    Lithuania

    Estonia

The last 3 were never recognized as part of the USSR by several countries including the USA, but that was only a legal point and did not represent reality.

There are currently several countries in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), which was the immediate successor to the Soviet Union.  However it was never meant to be a permanent entity with national status, and is now more like a loose confederation similar to the European Union.  All former Soviet republics except Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia participate in some way (Turkmenistan is an "associate" member lacking full rights).

  3. I can only think of 8. There are the five Stans of the previous Soviet Central Asian Republics, Turkmenistan, etc, as well as the previous Soviet Caucasian Republics of Armenia, Georgia and Azerbaijan, although some count these three as part of Europe.

I think " top contributor" Marcelino should also check his Funk & Wagnel to see that half the countries he mentioned  above are in Europe and not in Asia.

Ok, then I forgot that most of the area of the Russian Federation is in Asia, ( Siberia, etc) so that's counrty number 9.
