  1. Botanical Garden, definitely.  It is beautiful.

  2. There are some great off-the-beaten tracks museums/sights such as the Library of Congress Jefferson Building, the National Building Museum and National Museum of Women in the Arts. The free concerts at Ft. Reno ... right off the Tenleytown Metro Station / Red Line.

    Also, pick up a copy of 'Mondo DC' for the truly bizarre and unusual places.
