What are the British equivilants to the American Republican and Democratic parties? Would the Labor party be similar to the Republican party/

  1. Even though we don't have a two party system, and have three main parties, the British equivalent of the Republicans would be the Conservatives as they lean towards the right. British equivalent of Democratic would be the Labour Party as they lean towards the left.


  2. in addition to Fiona's answer...in the Northern Irish Assembly there's also Sinn Fein = Republican and then there's all the Unionist parties who are conservative/democratic.

  3. There are no real equivalent parties, both your US parties are much further right of our conservative party, and you would regard our socialist parties, both labour and liberal as rampant cummunists.

  4. In the Westminster Parliament, there are three main parties. The Conservative party is the nearest equivalent to the Republicans and the Liberal Democrats (often shortened to the Lib-Dems) to the Democrats.  The Labour Party is closer to the Democrats than the Republicans.

    In the Scottish Parliament, it is different. Here there is no main party equivalent to the Republicans - the Scottish National Party being the closest. The other main parties are Labour and the Lib-Dems (see above)
