How about government subsidy or government policy/regulation intervention in general.  Chaebol in Korea (hence, Samsung, Daiwa etc.) and keiretsu in Japan (mitsubishi etc..)  the structure is a quasi monoply through this process the firm grew until they are big enough to be international behemoth.

If an industry is cozy with the goverment that will be a tremendous advantage, try approach the essay on this stand point.  Boeing  = military contract.
