What are the Essentials for a PS3 purchase?

I am set on buying a PS3 simply for it's Blu-Ray features...

With that in mind, what are the essentials for getting the most out of my investment?

I am thinking of going with the $499, 80Gig MGS4 PS3. I've also looked into remotes for it that would make Blu-Ray playback much more enjoyable. The Messiah Darklite PlayStation 3 Media Remote for $29 looks good, although I am sure I can find it for cheaper if I look around.

Although I'm not sure exactly what the HDMI will do for me, I've heard I MUST get it. That is, if I want the full HD effect. CNET has one on their review of the PS3 that they say works fine for under $3.

I will look at the Blu-Ray movies. I am for sure getting Tiger Woods 09 when it comes out. Other than the purchases above, is there anything else I should look into?

Does the PS3 come with a headset? I love my 360's online. So I plan on spending the time that I do play on the PS3, online.

The person I live with is a huge PS2 fan but knows virtually nothing about PS3. So what are some good games? Really, just what's your favorite that is exclusively on PS3 on not 360.

Well first of all do you have a High definition compatible television? If your tv is not HD compatible then there is no point in getting a HDMI cable. However if your tv is HD then GET a HDMI cable, it will will be worth it! (HDMI will give you about four times the resolution of standard def) Also HDMI cable quality varies greatly which is why the price varies also so make sure you're buying good quality cables

Good choice with MGS4, that's a must buy for ps3 owners. Other ps3 exclusive games you can look into are Resistance 1-2, Uncharted, Killzone 2, Gran Turismo (you've got to see the graphics on this one), Motorstorm, SOCOM, Ratchet & Clank (this is one fun game), ridge racer 7.

About the Blu Ray remote, I have heard excellent reviews about the official Sony blu ray remote (good design, easy to use, solid build) although there is one downside with the sony remote, in the dark you cannot see the buttons because it has not glowing buttons or backlight. But then again if the other remotes don't have that either then sony's remote is the way to go.

Now with online, get ready for free online, built in wi-fi and the playstation3 is compatible with almost any bluetooth headset you have. So if your mobile used one then simply connect it to your ps3.

Only get an HDMI cable if you have an HDTV, like the person above said, you can't use an HDMI cable without an HDTV.

I'm not sure about a $3 HDMI cable, a good one would cost around $20-30. Also, do NOT buy those $100 Monster cables, their claims of being better than other HDMI cables are BS.

So yes, definitely get an HDMI cable if you can, the picture quality looks 20x better compared to SD ( Standard Definition).

As for games, get Metal Gear Solid 4, it's an amazing game, a must-have for all PS3 owners, and arguably one of the best games ever made.

Not to mention there are quite some games on the PS3's "Greatest Hits" label, which means those games have sold a lot of copies and are half-price ( $30 instead of the usual $60). Some really great ones include, Resistance: Fall of Man, Warhawk, and Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, those are the best in my opinion, and they're only $30.

They can be identified with a red 'Greatest Hits' label at the top of the game cover.

Oh yea, PS3's online is free, and the PS3 has built in Wi Fi, plus you can use most Bluetooth headsets with it.

Also get metal gear...great online games and fun!!! I love my ps3!!!! I have the sony blue ray remote and also dual shock controller.... I also have a tower that holds my system upright and also charges 2 controlers!! And get the HD cable!!

It comes with everything you need, except the HDMI cable...they are like $4 online.

ok first off...

buy the sony blu ray remote.. its cheaper and better

the MGS4 bundle *might* be hard to find

you only need a hdmi if your playing on a high def tv, if so go to monoprice.com

blu ray movies really are 100x better

really good games to look for. little big planet, resistance 1&2, uncharted, ratchet and clank, god of war 3, socom

no it does not come with a headset
