  1. As the other answerers have said, the islands directly to the top of Australia are the Torres Strait Islands, but perhaps you mean Indonesia. The Portugese speaking island is East Timor and it was part of Indonesia until 2002. West Timor (the other half of the island) is Indonesian. Irian Jaya (the western part of the island of New Guinea) is also part of Indonesia.

  2. Called   TORRES STRAIT Islands

  3. Those islands are the islands of indonesia, the speak indonesian, there is also east timor which was a Portuguese colony.

There are also the torres strait islands.

  4. I'm not sure which islands you are talking about.. There is Torres strait and the natives are aboriginals who, obviously speak their aboriginal language, likely that they speak english as well but not all would.

then there's the larger islands Papua New Guinea. They have three official languages; English, Tok Pisin, Hiri Motu.

    not sure about portugese though...

have a look on a map, find out which islands your talking about and then search on google for native languages =)

EDIT: not sure what was wrong with what i have said but yeah, East Timor does speak portugese it was colonised by portugal in the 16th centrury.

I guess i should have worded it better, Indigenous Australians should have been what i said... sorry to those i offended..

  5. The islands between Australia and PNG are generally called the Torres Strait Islands, there are quite a few and they each have a different name (eg Thursday Island).

    English and local languages.

The Portuguese settled in places like Indonesia so there could be islands there that speak Portuguese.

  6. Islands of the Torres Strait.

Torres Strait Islanders are definately not the same cultural group as Australian Aboriginals.

Today the Islanders speak English and also Torres Strait Creole.

The Torres Strait consists of 18 island and 2 Northern Peninsula Area communities. The islands are scattered over a geographic area of 48,000 square kilometres, from the tip of Cape York, north towards the borders of Papua New Guinea and Indonesia.

There are 5 traditional island clusters in the Torres Strait. For more information go to The Torres Strait Regional Authority website:

  7. Cook Islands, Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islanders.
