I have to learn the words which the black belts say at the end of a shotokan class.

Generally, the pattern is the sensei sits down, then the high black belts and then the rest of teh class according to rank sit down. The black belt will then say "moxou" meaning eyes closed. What comes next???

  1. In my shotokan dojo we usually just call it just the ceremony

    (please mind my spelling)

usually either the sensei or the highest belt with say the ceremony

first he says " sesam" or something like that which means sit down i think

    then

"Mokusto" which sounds kind of like "Nok-tso" to me

then everyone shuts their eyes and meditates till the sensi commands us to stop which is like Yame or something

then we repeat after sensei when he says

Dojokun or something then .. seek proffesional character, be faithful, endever, refrain from violence

then shomen ni rei and we bow

    then Sensei ni Rei

    then  Otaga ni re

then he says something that sounds like tatay

    then we thank him

  2. In a Japanese school, this is best known as the "Reishiki Bow Ceremony" and it is something done in honor of the instructors, the creator of martial arts, and to all the students of the class.

Kind of hard to read, but I will type it out for you. At the beginning, you say "Mokusto", pronounced "Mo-ku-so." This simply means meditate in Japanese. You will then count for 10-30 seconds and afterwards, you will give the command "Yame", meaning stop in Japanese.

Afterwards, the head instructor will turn around towards the front of the room (in my Dojo, there is a portrait of Funakoshi we bow to). You will then say "Shomen ni Rei", pronounced as spelled, and the translation of this simple means "bow to front of the room."

Next, the head instructor will return facing the front of the class and you will then say "Sensei ni Rei", pronounced as spelled meaning "bow to the teacher." During the bow, sometimes the class will say "Arigato Gizahimasta", meaning "Thank you for your instruction."

Last you will say, "Otaga ni rei", pronounced as spelled, meaning "Bow together as class." During this bow, sometimes everyone will say "Chimuwaku", meaning "Teamwork" in Japanese.

I hope this helps you out a little more. You say you have done this before but didn't know the commands so hopefully the rest is self-explanatory.
