Question:

What are the Michigan Regulations on Bluegill Keeping?

I live in Michigan and caught a bluegill near the Roscommon County area. I took the fish home and put it in a tank. However, after a little more research, people keep saying that it is illegal. I would like to know what the regulations are in Michigan for keeping a bluegill. The Bluegill is about 4 to 5 inches in length...if that helps at all. All I want is for a tank fish, not a breeding program or anything. Thanks!

  1. FishTank,

Just to ask, what live food are you planning on feeding this fish?

I was able to find this FAQ on the DNR website.

    http://midnr.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/MiDNR....

I suggest verifying there is no closed season for bluegill under fishing seasons.

  2. Answer to your question: to make this easy for you one click. All the regulations are found in one click of the mouse. at http://www.michigan.gov/documents/dnr/fi...

this will answer your question.  Have a great day.

  3. Hi Michigan, me too.  We just always caught and ate bluegill's forever,

but to keep it in a tank, #1 who is to know, and if you really are that

concerned, try Michigan.org.  The State web site, you may have to search, but you will find your answer there.

Personally, I would think it is your business what you do with a fish caught in our Great Lakes.... The state does not keep track of how many are eaten!!

    Hope this may help you.
