Planning to move from Scotland to Lake Nipigon, and wondered what the midges (mosquitoes) are like there. Are they as bad as the Highlands of Scotland?

  1. in the summer they can get bad.  I heard something and tried this though (and it oddly worked) pour a thin line of listerene (mouth wash) around your property and it acts like an invisible barrier for the mosquitos and black flies.  They just go away.  It's insane how much it works.  My aunt's house is surrounded by swampland, we did this and not a single person saw a mosquito all night.

  2. Skeeters are seasonal and cold as well as wind take care of them. Depends on the year also. I don't know what they're like in Scotland but I can't imagine them being anywhere near as bad as in the Northwest Territories, Yukon territory or Nunavut territory. There's lots though for the time they're active. Spraying from big 4 engine bombers takes care of them but I don't know if they do that in remote areas or anywhere anymore for that matter.

  3. I live on Lake Nipissing right outside North Bay. The mosquito's are usually unbearable for a few weeks in the beginning of summer, but this year they were hardly a bother at all. Even the black flies didn't put in much of an appearance. I wish I could say the same thing about Shad flies. While they don't bite, they are still a nuisance as they are EVERYWHERE! Enjoy our Country! That's a beautiful area!
