    V = 5

    X = 10

    L =  50

    C = 100

    D = 500

    M = 1000

    For example:

    1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10

    I, II, III, IV, V, VI, VII, VIII, IX, X

    As noted, each number uses a letter a maximum of three times ... except on some clock faces, where IV is often written as IIII because it looks better (something I discovered recently on Yahoo Answers).
