  1. VOIP and wireless technology is better today than it ever has been.  Depending on the area, VOIP has closed the gap or even overtaken landline phones in clarity and quality, and has quite literally blown them out of the water in the cost arena.  Cellular phones have left a lot to be desired, still, in clarity and reliability of signal, but have added a vast amount of mobility to our communications habits.

About the only remaining strengths of the land-line phone system, that I can think of, are its ability to remain clear and active, despite loss of internet and/or electrical power, as well as the ability of emergency services to locate us based solely on the connection.  Neither of these features has been available at the same level of reliability, with VOIP or wireless communications as of yet.
