What are the U.S. legal restrictions on overseas firearms purchases?

Can you buy a pistol or rifle overseas and bring it home?

Special fees? Import taxes?

Can a state make laws about this, or is it strictly a federal matter (assuming that the type of weapon isn't restricted in a given state)?

  1. I don't know the laws. I believe it wouldn't matter but you would still have to fill out the form you usually need to buy a gun and the NICS check as well. Semi-automatic rifles I don't think you can. You can get parts although minus the reciever and barrel. The thing is guns are illegalt to privatley own in every coutry except America and Switzerland.

Check with BAFTE. I think this warrants a call to them. I really don't like them though...

  2. Go to "www.tsa.gov"

  3. This would be an importation of a firearm. It would have to be brokered through a Customs House and if allowed it would probably have duties due and a ton of paperwork.

Years ago, in the early 1980's, I brought four handguns purchased overseas into the US as a military serviceman. I contacted AFT. They sent a couple of sheets to fill out and needed my arrival location, date and time. There was a Customs and ATF Agent who escorted me to a secure area. They inspected the firearms, verified serial numbers and gave me a copy of the importation documents. If your not active duty it may not be that easy.

  4. Yes 922 will apply and you will have to have it imported by a licensed importer

    922 is about importing guns

Your SKS was imported with a C&R exception

Putting a different stock on the gun voids it's C&R status

The rifle itself does not meet the "sporting purpose" restriction on imported guns

Therefore to be 922 compliant you have to eliminate a certain number of foreign parts so that the rifle contains no more than ten foreign made parts

This according to  ATF makes it an American made gun, which would mean that it would not be considered imported which 922 would not have allow as a non sporting firearm

The parts kits scheme was a way of circumventing 922

922 was not a means of eliminating parts kit guns

They came up with a whole nother scheme for those

    Dude

Did you even read that law

It is all about what it takes to IMPORT firearms into America
