confused by your question... I assume you mean the entire land line telephone network, and not an office phone system....

the telephone network is used for almost all of the communication that occurs, from simple POTS landline voice telephone service, to DSL for consumers and businesses, to ISDN, T-1 lines and other data WANs, which also carry the traffic from the cellular towers to the cell phone providers switches, and network. The telephone network also is the backbone for a majority of the internet...

with out the telephone network cellular phones, and the internet would also fail to exist... at least in the way that we know them today...
