  1. Watches the sheep, makes sure they don't wander, helps them out when it is time for them to lamb and marks each lamb and mother with a number so that they know which lamb goes with which ewe, counts them frequently to ensure that none have escaped, maintains the fences/enclosures, moves them from field to field to find the best grazing ground, clips their feet to ensure infection doesnt set in, clips their fleece in summer, feeds any lambs that are rejected or orphaned at birth, oversees the impregnation of the ewes in winter

  2. To *listen* to the sheep.

A sheep *herder*, on the other hand, manages the flock.

  3. A sheepherder watches and safeguards the sheep.

  4. To keep his sheep together and from wandering off and getting hurt.  He keeps them safe from predators.  Makes sure they have the best grazing available to them and good water.  A sheep herder has good dogs to help him take care of his sheep and keep them safe.

  5. To protect and to keep them together.

  6. Let's not forget sheering. Sheering is done to harvest the wool that grows on them. Very important. Brings in a lot of money and then it grows back. See the movie The Sundowners with Robert Mitchum.

  7. What year is it? I'll bet 98% of America thinks of a sheep herder as the opening credits of "Perfect Strangers". Balki was a character, not an actual real life sheep herder.  know a lot of people who own & handle sheep, etc. Not 1 of them goes by the title of "sheep herder".  - Most of them are smart enough to be self employed - so they can ask to be called whatever they wish - as well as chosing which duties to include in their job position.
