Question:

What are the actual requirements to obtain a Hawaii driving license?

I just recently moved from a military base in japan, and while i was there i took a driving class, which included a written test, driving hours and then a road test. I have a certificate and everything, and from there i was able to obtain an international drivers license so that i can drive in the states. Is that enough to now get a Hawaii Drivers license? or do i still have to take the driving part of the test? (I know i have to take the written portion)

thanks!

  1. You can drive with your international license for one year in hawaii. But to get a hawaii DL, here is the info from the DMV. Looks like you have to take the driving test.

What are the requirements to apply for an instruction permit for foreign nationals who have valid foreign licenses?

You need to proceed to the Social Security office and apply for a number.  If you are not eligible to get a social security number, please advise that office to fax the verification letter to the nearest driver licensing office.  You also need to bring your valid passport with an attached I-94 card.  Fill an application for a type 3 (car) instruction permit. You will be required to take a general knowledge test.  Upon passing the eye test and the written test, you will be given a type 3 permit.  A road test is also required after passing the written test.  Upon passing the road test, we will invalidate your foreign license and notify the proper agency.  Fees:  $2 test, $5 permit, $8 road test fee and $18 for the license.
