I've never owned a boat before. I know there must be more involved than the purchase price, gas, and insurance. What else do I have to consider into my budget when looking for a boat?

  1. Depending on size there are alot of other cost.

A trailer kept boat is about the cheapest.  Your other cost will included winterizing, spring setup, and maybe storage if not kept at home.

A vessel kept in the water will have more cost to look forward to.

Slip rent, electric use, pump out, winterizing, haul out , storage, boat painting and paint, spring setup, zincs, and depending on your location bottom cleaning during the year.  Of course there is also the unknown, like prop damage, shaft damage, fuel filters, etc...

I worked on a vessel that the owner paid over 2 mil for and could not understand why the cost to keep it going was so high, it was his first and last boat.

  2. a boat is a hole in the water that you throw money into. the only way to reallly know is to own one.

  3. Need more information.

If it's a boat that will stay in a slip, you will have a disturbing amount of expenses.

    No joke.

If you have a boat that you can trailer and keep in dry storage it won't be as painful.

Generally, boats are one h**l of a lot more expensive to maintain  than most people would suspect.

  4. give us an idea as to size, propulsion, how it will be used, where it will be kept.
