What are the advantages and disadvantages of having wind mills as a source of alternative energy?

Ugly looking, but they provide free, clean power with little or no pollution.  No burning involved. Other than the burning that occurred while making the steel product.

There ARE no disadvantages to using wind power. The advandages are painfully obvious. The only temporary down-side is to get the system up and running.

A major wind farm project on James Island off of Victoria BC Canada got shut down prior to construction due to protests over the effect on the viewscape.

Some of the cons of windmills are they are noisy, they are expensive, they produce uneven amounts of energy, and they can kill many birds. However some pros about them are they are free energy, they are clean, cool to watch, and are better for the environment. I guess the answer to this question is in your own opinion.

mostly the amount of space required inorder to have enough windmills to support the energy demand.

  Plus the constant maintience cost of repair, and on really windy days they have a control that only allows it to spin so fast if that fails complete rebuilt is needed, and if they are grouped as in a wind farm, then normally you have to repair others as well as replace the other.

  Also if your in an area that doesnt have a constant wind you have to rely on a diffrent source, or revert to a battery back up, and our chemical battery systems used today are not the greatest.

Advantage is that once the windmill is built, the electricity produced will eventually pay for the building of the windmill. There is no pollution produced by windmills making it almost free and envirnmentally responasable.

Disadvantage....they require lots of space, like open fields that could be used for farming and bats and birds have been known to fly into the propellors and get kills.

It would be nice to see a field full of Corn, with huge windmills rising out of it. South Missouri would be perfect place for this.

Wind speed changes throughout the day

Contrary to popular belief, modern ones with large blades are not known to kill birds. Some of the smaller ones do because they spin so fast that birds can't see them.
