  1. Fission is what we currently use in our nuclear power plant. It works by breaking down atoms and releasing the energy in the bonds of the atom. It's big advantage is that it can produce a lot of energy. It's downsides are that it's expensive to set up and maintain and that you're left over with radioactive fuel that you need to dispose of.

Fusion is what happens in the sun. It works by combining atoms to make larger ones. The advantage of fusion is the potential for TONS of energy supplied by a simple fuel such as hydrogen. Also, the waste product of fusion is heavier atoms which won't be radioactive, a nice advantage. The big disadvantage of fusion is that we can't currently get it to work under any reasonable conditions.

  2. Do you mean with respect to generating power, or making a bigger bomb? I'll assume the former.

Fission works, there are many hundreds of plants around the world. Fusion doesn't work. It may be working 10 years from now, or it may not be.

Fission produces a fair amount of radioactive waste that has to be stored. Fusion probably not as much, although don't know until we have one operating.

Both have a huge amount of fuel available.

    Both are clean and non-polluting.

Fission costs a fair amount of money for a plant. Fusion plant cost is unknown, but probably larger.
