What are the advantages and disadvantages of using an Atlas?

An Atlas becomes inaccurate if its old.

For example I have an Atlas that lists the USSR when now its called

Russia.

Information on population changes over the dyears

And the info becomes outdated

Well it's good to use an atlas because it gives you a geographic perspective of the world or other place. A downside of using a Atlas (drawn map) is that The United States is actually smaller than revealed on most maps. It's because most countries tend to exaggerate the size of  "Home areas."
