  1. This is probably the best question I've come across in a long while here.

    It's a subjective question. Depends on where you're talking about, and the impact of your decisions. For instance, preserving wetlands acts as a drainage buffer for surrounding areas, creates a wildlife sanctuary, and cleans and allows runoff to re-enter the local aquifer, as opposed to being lost. The disadvantages are that there is less room for housing and development and that there are certain legal obligations that must be met (and paid for, by someone) when land is set aside for specific purposes, even conservation.

      Wish I had more time to answer! Preservation and wise land use is the best line of work for an environmentalist, and more people are needed!
