  1. I'm not sure what you mean by "PRE" laminated particle board?

Particle/flake/chip board is essentially made from scrap. The process bonds, glues, rolls, presses the mix then to be cut.

In my own opinion, beyond the fact that otherwise wasted material is re-used, I see no real construction advantage. Certainly in the late 20th century and beyond, it can be widely seen in housing construction, and an obvious advantage to builders, is a slightly lower cost, and larger availability often, over plywood.

I suppose it may have viable, practical applications, but not in my World, or frame of reference.

    Just my two "sense"

  2. When I ran my cabinet shop we used a great deal of pre-laminated particle board and it is a very good product if you are skilled in the carpentry trade.  Most laminate companies offer their product preglued to the particleboard to save you this step.  You must be careful when cuting it as it will chip and the edges are very sharp.  However you can manufacture your cabinets or furniture in less time and end up with beautiful results.

  3. Particle board is better than wood because the "oriented strands" plus the glue gives it strength. If you add a laminate on top f that, in the case of flooring or a counter top, you have a well wearing and cost effective solution to many of the alternatives in building materials.

There. Man-made is better, in this case!

  4. I'll assume you are talking about laminant flooring. Advantages are it's much cheaper, it's much more uniform in size, it moves more consistantly with humidity conditions than wood and it's a little easier to install.

Disadvantages are particle board will absorb water faster than wood and will swell and be ruined by just a little water.

Just a FYI as for Paul A's answer, particle board does not have oriented strands. OSB has oriented strands. OSB stands for oriented strand board.

If you are talking about shelving, the only real advantages are, you don't have to paint or laminate it yourself and it looks nice

  5. By Pre-laminated particle board I assume you mean the shelving material they make out of particle board.

Personally I have found NO advantage to it because you have to use more shelving supports than you do with solid lumber.  For SHORT shelves it makes for a nice finished look.   The front edge is usually rounded and painted not laminated.

The only use I have ever found for particle board (this is the boards that look like sawdust glued together) is to be used as an underlayment for counter-tops that you laminate yourself.   MDF is taking over the market and is smoother and just as strong.

Counter tops that you order or buy are also

"Pre-laminated Particle Board" but I do not that is what you are referring to.

Your question is of a very general nature, you may want to be more specific.
