  1. Alloys strengthen the metal that they are mixed with.  Pure gold is very malleable but when mixed with an alloy it becomes strong enough to use/wear/  They can also reduce the overall cost of the primary metal.

  2. Alloys are mixtures of one metal or different metals or elements.

Alloys are generally stronger than the metal before it was made into an ally ( if its not i see no point in making the mixture ).

In a pure metal,,, the atoms are spread apart so like  lets say that the O's are the atoms.  It is like this

    o     o     o

    o    o     o

and yeah. However, when other elements or metals are mixed, the smaller atoms GO IN BETWEEN the 2 atoms, hence making it stronger. As it is impossible to cut an atom with a saw or anything else (except LHD) it is vertually impossible to cut the alloy as there are atoms in between. If it did cut it there would be a nuclear reaction and you will die.

SO the alloy will look like this

    O  o   O  o   O  o

    o  O  o  O  o  O  o

SO the space in between the bigger atoms are filled in by the smaller atoms, making it stronger and harder ( almost impossible ) to cut.

    Hope i helped.

  3. You gain properties that the plain elements do not have.

Iron is soft, brittle. Steel, an alloy of iron, is strong, rustproof, etc.
