Personally, freewheel hubs seem much more sensible and easy to service to me, but then I have only ever read about the cassette variety. What are the advantages?

  1. As well as all of the servicing issues stated, freehubs now only appear on the lower value bikes.  There is, therefore, a greater selection of cassets on the market, giving you a wider selection of manufacturer, quality, materials and performance.

  2. Easier to clean and maintain. You don't have to worry about the threading or size - One size fits all bsically (with a few spacers). Can go up to (now) 11 speed.

  3. The chief reason, so I remember hearing at the time, was wider bearing spacing which provides a stronger wheel/hub.  The side benefit is definitely easier removal, foolproof installation, and simpler tools.  You also don't have to worry about cross-threading the delicate aluminum threads that are on old freewheel hubs.  I'm not sure if the older freewheel/hub designs could have been made better than they were, but the newer setup is certainly lighter weight, even with more gears on the cluster.

Freewheels were rather a pain sometimes.  If you didn't get each threaded cog tight, the top end of the freewheel could come loose while riding under heavy torque.  Simple fix, but it required you to get off the bike and jump through some hoops....cassettes don't have that problem unless you severely (severely) undertighten the lockring.

    Hope this helps.   :o)

  4. i thought i need a cessette to ride my bike in Ny but a freewheel is enough, the best combo is front chainring 42T and rear cog 16T

    bye
