  8. Hello,

    earthworms have an important ecological function:

    . Biological (they convert organic matter into Humus, improving soil fertility);

    . Chemical (they help the amount of available nitrogen and phosphates, that can be used by plants as nutrients);

    . Physical (improve aeration and drainage).

    "Darwin estimated that arable land contains up to 53,000 worms per acre (13/m²), but more recent research from Rothamsted Experimental Station has produced figures suggesting that even poor soil may support 250,000/acre (62/m²), whilst rich fertile farmland may have up to 1,750,000/acre (432/m²), meaning that the weight of earthworms beneath the farmer's soil could be greater than that of his livestock upon its surface. One thing is certain however: rich, fertile soil that is cared for organically and well-fed and husbanded by its steward will reap its reward in a healthy worm population, whilst denuded, overworked, and eroded land will almost certainly contain fewer, scrawny, undernourished specimens." in http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earthworm

  9. They make the soil fertile. They till the soil allowing the oxygen to pass through it..an ideal soil for plant growth. Earthworms emit wastes that make the soil well fertilized..

  10. they eat stuff ; left over veggies, scarps etc.)

  11. The advantage of earth worms is that they till the soil in a natural way.If you have layers of different soil types the worms will eventually mix them. Try it in a Glass jar.
