Question:

What are the alternatives to kindergarten?

I'm agonizing over whether and which kindergarten is best for my little girl. Are there alternatives to sending a child to kindergarten to ensure that she gets a good start for school?

I have a very flexible job for all but two days a week (I'm a university professor), however I don't feel competent to take on the teaching role at this level.

My daughter also lives in a bi-lingual household, if that makes any difference to suggestions.

  1. Explore the school choices in your area (private, charter, public). You may want a montessori program.

  2. I have taught kindergarten for three years and can tell you first hand the benefits I have seen. Kids that move on to first grade that went to kinder have already made bonds with other students and feel more comfortable when they go to first grade. They also have mastered all the skills required for kindergartners in the district. It has been my experience that parents who have difficulties separating with their children when they start kinder cause unneeded stress and anxiety in their child in the first few days. Kindergarten is such a great grade and I think your little girl could really benefit from it, as well as you. Alternatives to PUBLIC school could possibly be a Montessori school. See if there is one in your area...it is a totally different philosophy of teaching than regular school so do your research. Good luck!
