Preventive medicine and epidemiology. You use biostatistics to determine if there is actually a problem in the environment and population you're studying (you expect a certain rate of occurrence of a disease in a population), and whether it is worth putting a lot of money to intervene (putting money into anti-smoking campaigns when the population doesn't have a high rate of smoking).

You also use it during clinical trials to determine if your treatment actually worked or not.
