What are the artist trying to express in the surrealism art movement??

The unconscious. They are interested in dreams and basically creating a work without a concept in mind hence "unconscious" ideas. That is why their works seem strange and all over the place, because they are not planned. Also, it is their way of expressing a memory. How do you paint an image of a memory if its in your mind? its a strange movement, but they were the types of questions they asked themselves. They followed the ideas of Sigmund Freud.
