  1. 4,7 and threeve

  2. Well for one, you have to have enough Passengers aboard each aircraft to cover the expenditures as well as have a surplus to spend in the future.

Finding alternative fuel for aircraft is one step to reduce the costs as well as smaller, longer range aircraft.

Another problem is the huge amounts of competition, while competition is good in a Capitalist economy, too much of it cuts profits from each airlines bringing the whole industry down

  3. That is a terribly broad question,   airlines are suffering due to fuel costs which affect them directly (their own fuel) and indirectly (businesses and travellers cut back because of impact of fuel costs on business)  Military pilots are staying in longer because the hitch is longer, which then induces them to stay and retire. VLJ's are coming on, and fractionals and charters are picking up because of the ease of travel from an FBO at a smaller airport closer to their destination.  Turboprop Regionals are starting to look attractive again when it appeared the RJ's were going to make them all but extinct. Internet meetings are making travel less of a necessity, but it will never replace business travel.

General aviation has always fluctuated but has never dropped off the radar and never will. Airlines will become more streamlined, and probably more inline with mass transit. Assigned seating is a major pain for the trunk carriers and Southwest has never used it and consistantly shows a profit. The mains consider those services + meals, and other luxury items necessary to attract their customers. There are only so many slots/gates for  t/o and landing at busy airports, they have already adopted RVSM to get more flights handled... the system is saturated in high traffic areas...   after that... it's all speculation.
