What are the ball shapes for on some power lines?

I always see these ball shapes (orange or white) across power lines but only in some locations.

  1. Good question. I'd like to know the answer too.

    I thought they were to help contain the electromagnetic field effects around the wires......like the small 'nodules' on some computer cables. Those are iron magnets I believe, which help reduce the field effects of those cables from interfering with the wires near by. I still tend to think this is what they are for, but if someone has an answer....I'd like to hear it.


  2. They are so big birds don't land on the lines and get zapped.

  3. So low flying aircraft, like crop dusters, can see the lines.

    They are only in locations that are likely to have low flying aircraft.
