What are the basic considerations in choosing a stock?

I'm using data from Yahoo! finance for a school project. what are the basic criteria I should be looking? I heard that high ROE is a good indicator of a good stock. Thanks!

For a quick fundamental comparison using yahoo:

ROE(look for greater than 20%)

Total Cash

Total Debt/Equity (I like low to no debt)

% held by insiders

(In my opinion if the insiders own too little then they are more likely to be lining their pockets.)

Short % of float.  

( Then you have to decide if the shorts are correct or not, but this could indicate a risky stock.)

If  you are simulating a trade in class so your time is short you need technical analysis.

You can get more info at prophet.com but I don’t know what yahoo charts can do.

Check out support and resistance, and OBV.  From a timing stand point you might want to go with CAT for your stock.

I´ve been investing for more than 20 years and trading for almost 14, and I can tell you that if you want to make BIG and FAST profits, I recommend you trading rather than investing, trading can help you to go from rags to rich.

the first thing should be the history of the company. although investing on small firms could could earn us some good  return , its a risky business.the risk is there with big companies too , but comparitively lower.the growing rate of a small company is faster than that of a larger one ( initial rate of growth) and that makes them attractive . so investment should be a combination of big time and small companies.there are no such thing as basic criteria , its all depends on market and policies of goverment and the company. suppose if the government declares subsidies on fertilizers , the market value of fertilizer shares are likely to increase. so the basic consideration for choosing a stock will be the current economic atmosphere, if u are looking for short term investment and reputation of the company if u are looking for long term investment. good luck with ur project.
