  1. Pliers: Lineman's (big) with wirecutters, and needlenose (small, also with wirecutters)

Screwdrivers: slot, phillips, and 2 sizes of square drive.

A knife, for stripping wire and opening up cable

A hammer, for mounting electrical boxes, taking out knock-outs, and driving staples.  Also makes holes in plaster.

A circuit tester or simple VOM (volt-ohmmeter) for checking circuits.

    Gloves

A head-light or flashlight, preferably one that can be used hands-free.  When you've turned off the lights to work on a circuit, it can get pretty dark!

An electric drill, for running wires through joists/wall studs.

A stepladder, high enough for you to work on ceiling fixtures.

A fish tape, for pulling wires through walls or ceilings.

    Electrical (vinyl) tape

    Twist-on connectors (marrettes)
