Question:

What are the basic essentials that I need to start making jewelery?

I want to start making jewelery as a hobby, so I went to Michael's Arts and Crafts store..and my goodness. I got so confused.

They sell so many different tools and have different price ranges. When it comes to jewelery making, do I have to buy tools that are a bit more expensive or does it not really make that much of a difference? Also, if you could list the tools and other basic essentials, that'd be awesome.

Please and thank you :)

  1. Are you planning on doing simple string work and some earrings or wire jewelry?

Simple string work only requires a crimping tool to crimp your ends with.  Earrings and earwires require round nose pliers to make those lovely, perfect connecting hoops with.

I suggest the three pack from WalMart.  It's the cheapest I have found and once you get going, you find a use for all of them.  Don't forget the crimper! - it doesn't come in that set and it's key to a good crimp so your work won't fall apart.

You need stringing material.  There are lots of different brands out there so get one you think you'll like and experiment with different brands.

You'll need your focal bead (the main attraction to the piece) and complimentary beads to go into it.  Some bead stores sell their beads by the bead.  That's a nice way to make a custom piece, just make sure you get a couple extra of each one.

Have a ruler handy if you don't have a bead board.  You'll want to make the right length for your necklaces or bracelets. Bead boards are great though if you can afford one.  They are those grey printed (usually oval) foam things with the measurements printed on them and little wells to hold your beads while you are working.

Don't forget a clasp!  Get one to compliment your pieces' colors.

Some eye pins are handy for simple earrings or dangles.  Head pins are too!  You can cut them to length with your wire cutters so go ahead and get the longest ones you can get the first time.  That will allow you some room to make mistakes on the connecting hoops you have to bend with your round noses.

Good luck and most of all --  Have fun!

  2. You'll need some needle-nosed pliers and wire cutters (most n.n. pliers come with a wire cutter incorporated).  You don't have to get a real expensive pair...in fact, they might be cheaper at a home improvement store.  As for other tools and materials, it depends on what kind of jewelry you want to make, and how much.  In any case, you'll probably want to get some sort of organizer to keep all your stuff in.

  3. One of my favorite tools I have is a smooth version of a needle nose pliers.  It came in a three pack from Wal-Mart! (CHEAP)  The n.n. are great but when you are doing finish work the grips on the inside of the pliers will leave unsightly marks.  With this tool you can shape and crimp and not leave scratches on whatever you are doing.  If you are bending wire or making your own jump rings these are great for that too!  Like the other person said, it depends entirely on what you are working with, beading, wire, metal, etc...
