  1. you can go to usavolleyball.org

    ncaa.org

    fivb.org

to download a complete copy of the rule.

  2. You can only hit the ball certain ways. No foot faults. A single person can only hit the ball once and the team can hit the ball 3-4 times after they receive the ball. All kinds of different rules.

  3. wow thats a really broad question...there's alot...but you learn fast...

serving: on person serves...the ball can hit the net but must go over, the server cannot step on or over the serving line

Passing: each team gets 3 hits, you cannot hit the ball more than one time in a row; you cannot hit the net, or cross the line dividing the 2 sides of the court; depending on the referrees you can play the ball out of bounds until a certain extent

    Oh..and the ball can't hit the ground...obviously...

When it does however...the other team gets the ball and the process begins again...When your team gets the ball back the next server serves...How do you know who's next...well you're in a rotation and you have to stay in that rotation or the ref can call you for it and take away points...the rotation your team is doing determines where you move next

  4. Burn last!!!  And, do not bash out the lights!! Mr. Scott will get pi**ed! 790

  5. okay i had to type this up for someone so here are most of the rules for volleyball:

Okay so there are six people on a court at one time. 1 setter, one right side hitter, two outside hitters, and two middle hitters. There are also two designated sections of the court. Front row and back row. Front row hits the ball at the other team and back row passes the balls hit at your team.

For each position [setter counting as the second right side], one out of the two are back row and the other one is the front row. This will rotate as the game goes on.

The rules that i remember are:

    1) Only touch the ball once in a row. You can't touch it twice in a row. Once you touch it, you have to wait for someone else to contact it in order for you to be able to contact it again.

    2) Each team only has three hits a piece to get it over the net.

    3) You have to stay on your own side of the court. You CANNOT hit the net, or go over the line dividing the two sides.

    4) You cannot carry the ball, meaning you can't do anything that would mean you 'holding the ball' too long, or make it look like you're throwing it.

5)You have to hit it inside the opposing teams court. On your own side of the court, you can shank it, meaning that it could hit your hands and go off the court, but your teammates could still get it. But in order to keep it in play, they would have to get over the net and in the other team's court in 3 hits.

6)While serving, you cannot step over the line of the court, you have to start and contact the ball while you are behind the line of the court.

    So now the explanation:

---the setter- this person always gets the second ball. so once someone contacts it for the first time, it is the setters job to get the ball to one of the hitters. It is hard to be a setter because they must set the ball up in a way so that the hitters have the best way to hit it.

---the hitters [a.k.a front row]- they are responsible for passing the balls that come ovre and are really short or really close to the net. They get these balls, pass them to the setter, the setter sets them and they hit. If the back row passes the ball, then all the hitter has to do is wait to get set and hit the ball in the other court.

---the passers [a.k.a back row]- these people are responsible for getting most of the balls passed or hit over by the other team. they pass these balls as close to the setter as possible so it is as easy as possible for the setter to set the hitters. they can also pass or hit the ball over the net, but they have to stay behind the ten foot line [the line ten feet away from the net on each side].

---serving- you have to serve behind the line of the court [the back end line] and in the court. the server rotates each time.

---rotation- each time your team gets the ball or the point again, you rotate to the right so as a demonstration.

    1 2 3----> 4 1 2

    4 5 6----> 5 6 3

the person in the right back is the server each time.

So thats basically all i can think of right now. But if you have questions, just email or im me. But i wouldnt be too worried. This was only my first year of playing volleyball and i already know everything about it. So if your just starting, your coach will explain stuff to you. Good luck!

  6. you can only hit the ball three times on your team! heres an example! the other team serves, yuo hit th eball, another teammate does, and then another, ont he third hit, if it doesnt make it over, the other team serves again! you have to bump set, or spike!  ummm you can hit the ball when it is out only if a team mate on your side hits it and it goes out!

  8. You need to learn three basic movements:

bump/pass= a simple pass using your arms together to pass to the next person.

set= your arms are above your head and so is the ball, give the ball a slight push against it to pass to a person or possibly hit over the net.

hit/spike= a hit or a spike is when you throw your whole body into the ball to get it over the net.

basic rule one- you can only touch the ball 3 times on one side at a time. and only hit the ball once by one person. You cant get out of the boundaries lines or a point will be deticated to the other team.

basic rule 2- IF you do give the other team another point it's ok just relax the official will tell you to simply serve the ball again by other team. If you step over the line while you are serving and you step onto the playing court, that is called a foot fault. The other team will get the point.

basic rule 3- You cannot hit the net while you are playing the ball.

basic rule 4- always use 2 hands. A lift is when you take one hand and push up the ball.

basic rule 5- there are 6 people on one side of the net. One team serves, and misses, you rotate. IF you serve and keep making points just keep going it simply means youre on a roll.

basic rule 6- have fun and keep your head up at all times. It;s not any fun at all to have teamates that yell at you for making a simple mistake. When you make a mistake it just means you are getting better at what you did wrong.

Rememeber- have lots of fun and keep you head up!

    Lotsa luck!!!!! =)!

  9. When it is your turn to serve you can only hit the ball three times.

    You cant pass the line

and you cant hit the net or that will be an out of course and the other team gets the points.

You may serve underhand or over

  10. one person can only hit the ball three times in a row.  you can't touch the net. can't cross the line. no foot faults. that's just about it.  you can only hit certain ways 2. =)

good luck if you play. i play 2.

  11. You have several excellent answers covering many of the volleyball rules.

I would like to point out several corrections to previous posts.

The first serve of the match is usually determined by a coin toss in formal matches.  In informal matches, the winner of the first rally for serve gets the serve.

The team not serving first in the first game (now call set in FIVB or USAV)  will serve first in the second game.  If the match goes to a deciding game, another coin toss will determine the first serve for that game and the sides the teams will play on.

Formal matches only allow 6 players on a side.

Contact with the ball may be any part of the body, not just above the waist.  And it may be kicked on purpose.

If 2 players on the same team contact the ball at the same time, it is considered to be one contact and either player may play the next ball.

Many teams use 2 setters.  I refereed a junior college team that used 3 setters this season.

In the game today, hits may be done by front row anywhere on the court and by the back row players while they are behind the 3 meter (10 foot) line.  The back row players may move anywhere on the court to play the ball.

And you can download the rule book from the usav.org web site.  It is called the Domestic Competition Regulations book.

Or you can download it from the www.fivb.ch web site.

The book is about 180 pages and the other answers did a great job explaining the rules with only minor errors.
