After recently seeing the 1961 film “The Hustler” I have become overwhelmed by this type of pool and I very interested in learning the basic rules on how to play this kind of pool.

  1. Basically, it's a call shot game (call ball and pocket). You get one point for pocketing the called ball correctly, plus an additional point if you happen to pocket any additional balls, except the cue ball of course. Games are typically races to 150 points. Once there is only one object ball left on the table, the other 14 balls are re-racked minus the head ball so the player can continue his/her run. For this reason, it's strategic to leave the last object ball in a position where you can pocket it and carom the cue ball into the racking area to break apart these balls. You can also get negative points for fouling. Complete rules are below. The break shot is totally different than 8 ball or 9 ball, as you probably saw from the movie.

  2. Tim nailed the answer, but I figured I would throw in a couple of links if you like14.1(straight pool).
