this should teach you some basic rules..

  3. Union - Run forward - pass back

    League - run forward

  4. Rugby Union and Rugby League are 2 different sports. They are similar and Rugby League is a break away from Rugby Union (In England Rugby League is mostly played in the North).

The main idea in Rugby Union is to score a try. That is when the ball crosses the goal line. The player must touch the ball to the floor to score (a try scores 5 points). Then the team can attempt a conversion (worth 2 points) where a player kicks the ball through the upright. Above the cross bar. The other ways of scoring are a penalty and a drop goal (both worth 3 points). A penalty is kicked like a conversion but when the opposing team makes an infringement (within range of the kicker). A drop goal is where the player kicks the ball through the H above the bar during normal play.

when the ball is passed from one players hands to another players hands it must not go forward. When a player is tackled (brought down to the floor while he has the ball) he must release the ball.

There are 15 players on each side. There are 2 types of players forwards and backs. The forwards are involved in the scrum and throw in lines. The forwards wear numbers 1 to 8.

The backs generally are the players running with the ball. The backs wear 9 to 15.

Arguably the most important player is the Scrum half (always wears number 9). He is the player that gets the ball out from the scrum and from the throw in line. Jonny Wilkinson plays fly half (he normally kicks the goals)

England also won the World Cup 4 years ago but have been awful since and were not expected to repeat.

There are a lot of weird rules in Rugby Union but I have given you the general idea. I have been watching for many years and still don't understand all the referees decisions.

The best way to get to know the game more is to watch more games. If you watch games live fans will help you understand what is happening but don't ask them while the play is in progress.

Hope you enjoy the final. lets hope England retain the World Cup.

  5. Its a simple game and has one simple rule. Everything must be behind the ball. If you when your team have got the ball are in front of it you are offside. If the other team have the ball and you are in front of it you are offside. Kick through the sticks its a "goal" put the ball down behind your oppennts end and its a try. If it goes out of play its athrow in and thats about it a simple game.

  6. The original aim was to score goals by kicking the ball through the posts (as it is now) but to do this the team had to get the ball over the line at the end of the pitch (with the other side trying in the opposite direction). This then allowed them a 'TRY' at goal (hence the name). If the goal was not kicked there was no score (even though there was a try!).

This changed to being given points for the try and the conversion (which was the kick CONVERTING the try at goal to a goal).

The try is awarded 5 points and the conversion two. All other scores (penalties and drop kicks are awarded 3 points).

The ball is moved up the pitch by either running and/or passing or by kicking the ball. The most important 'law' of the game is not to pass the ball forward. The offside laws are quite complex and you don't need to know a lot about them to enjoy the game- just listen to the ref and you will pick it up.

In addition to the try and conversion the team will often pressurize the other side into making mistakes and giving away penalties (watch England towards the end of the games). Also there is Jonny's special the drop kick- not as easy as he makes it look!

The team without the ball will try to get hold of it in many ways- initially tackling and then mauling (where the players are on their feet) and rucking (where they are on the ground). On the ground a player cannot play the ball (or it's a penalty) and the players on their feet can ruck the players out the way with their feet.

The line-outs are pretty obvious as are the set scrums but there are many laws involved.

I hope you enjoy watching- go to a local rugby club for a really good atmosphere (and lots of partying). Fans tend to have a great time and get on with each other. I have never seen any trouble- the crowds are 'self policing' as they like it the way it is (you can understand why).

The above is for Rugby Union which has 15 players.

League has 13 and was the original 'professional' game (it was mainly in the north of England that players needed financial help but the Union was amateur objected and so a break away group was formed).

I prefer Union as it has more going on- League is easier to understand if you watch it (which is how it was designed - and to be fast). This was to attract paying crowds.

Although League can be faster Union is much faster than it used to be but still can go to a tremendous gladiatorial game like saturday's (which I love).

    Not many people know that!
