  1. Every style of karate has a differant belt ranking system. Whatever style you are interested in probably has a website with resources on it such as belt ranks. Even still, most japaniese styles use the same name Kyu, which basicly means level. Some styles have 6 levels of kyu, some have 10. They are counted backwards, up the the point before black. Example, 1rst kyu is the belt rank before black belt.

I myself am in Chito-Ryu karate and these are the belt ranks.

    White

    Yellow

    Orange

    Green

    Blue

    Brown

    Black.

As well, most styles also have levels of black belts called Dans. These are measured in degrees. The chito-ryu system has 10 degrees in black belts.

  4. There are about a million different types of karate. Every one of them has different belt colors, belt names, belt levels and requirements to get them. Probably the only consistent thing is that the white belt is the lowest rank. Most types also have different levels of black belt (like first degree black belt, second degree, etc).

  5. different styles have different colors and meanings for their belts. The style I learned was Okinawan, and the order/color was white, yellow, blue, green, brown, black. With two divisions in the lower belts and three in brown and 5 in black, each division denoted by a black stripe,or a red stripe on the black belt divisions.
