We gain an ally in the heart of the Middle East, and set up democracy and freedom, build military bases, keep security, and project American power in a troubled part of the world. It is of strategic importance to have a presence so close to Iran and Syria, for example. But, what's most important is that we complete our mission there. Driving out terrorists and setting up a functioning Iraqi government that is capable of handling itself should be priority number one.

good question.  no good answers, sadly.  one more step toward world domination perhaps?  oil is the obvious one, but mostly the government officials backing this invasion and occupation are in it for themselves and believe that the United States is supreme and superior and ought to force other nations to adhere to our plans for them and how they should run their countries so that OUR interests are best served.
