And does one outweigh the other?

  1. Benefits: everyone gets to get helped, even illegals and people who can't afford it.

Downsides: Taxes pay for it, so its money out of your pocket for people who can't afford it.

personally i think people should take care of themselves. it depends on your view

  2. The intended benefit of socialized medicine is that everyone has access to medical care, though that's not a reality given that socialized medical systems are known for their long wait times for treatment.

The main downside of socialized medicine is that it slowly erodes the quality of care available to all income levels by stifling the experimentation that leads to innovation.

I'm not a opposed to a mix of taxpayer financed health care and private health care, something similar to Singapore's model.  The best comparison we have in the U.S. is mail and package delivery.  We have the taxpayer subsidized postal service where you can get basic service and we have several private delivery companies - FedEx and UPS to name the biggest.  The mere existence of competition keeps the Postal service on its toes and allows for some experimentation across the industry to try doing things differently, which leads to improvements and best practices that can be adopted by the other carriers.

  3. look at the example of health care in canada and australia

  5. Half of our health care cost  are already paid for by the government and almost everyone does have  heath care, even though there are many people  who are uninsured. Under the current system there is a great deal of cost shifting which is inefficient creates a lot of paper work, and the burden for paying for uninsured people who can not pay  falls on sick people who pay or their insurance companies. The uninsured also increase the cost to the system by delaying too long to seek care, and using emergency rooms which must accept  all patients regardless of their ability to pay, instead of seeing a doctor in his office. The biggest advantage of universal health care will be lower total cost of the system  and lower  total cost  to people ( businesses) who now have   insurances

The downside very much depends on how the system operates. Many countries that have   government run systems (socialized) offer little choice and ration care by having long waiting times. However there are others  where this is not true, but  they are more expensive, but still cheaper than in the US.
