The two main benefits are that the child learns at his or her own rate. No wasting time by waiting for the rest of the class to catch up or, conversely, struggling to figure out what's going on when the class is ahead of that particular student.

The other benefit is that the parents have some control over what their children are taught and can ensure that course content reflects their own moral, ethical, religious or other points of view.

A kid can learn more and focus more and do better in education when there gaurdian is teaching them.

If the student, parents, enviornment and materials work in harmony you can be college ready by age 15 or 16.

It's a work at your own pace, set your own hours, choose what to study first or last, choose to work over the summer and weekends type situation.

You work at your own pace and level.   You are free to choose your course of study.  You can travel and still be able to take the work along.  You can actually make travel part of your curriculum.  You work/study during the hours that are best for you.   Basically, you and your parents can design an educational plan that is individualized just for you.

It means more time for social life for our family.  Our son's time is not spent sitting in classes all day.  In public school, he would stay after school for extra help or come home for us to teach him and work with him on homework.  He did not learn in class due to being distracted and lack of focus.  This was not the teachers' fault.  It is his learning style and personality.  

He now schools at home for 4-5 hours a day and the remainder of day is  free time.  He did not have free time while in public school.

All benefits listed below are _potential_ benefits. A homeschool's success depends upon the parents/kids involved. Just like being raised in a 2-parent home doesn't guarantee any type of character, homeschooling in itself doesn't guarantee anything. Also, the list below is not by any means exhaustive.

*Academic*

-can get as much help as needed

-can progress at his/her pace, moving ahead or staying behind as needed; this also means that a child can move ahead in one subject area but "stay behind" in another to really master it

-the style of academics can be tailored to the child

-parents can insist on a higher level of academics than local schools may provide

-with less wasted time, a child can learn just as much in less time than in school; plus there's no homework

-child can often study topics of interest

-many high schooled homeschoolers are expected to be responsible for their education, learning valuable time management skills (no teacher saying, "Hand this in tomorrow or you get a 0"!)

*Social*

-child is exposed to a variety of ages rather than mainly being surrounded by same-age peers. Why is this a benefit? It's not natural nor normal to be only around people your age. A child who is used to interacting with a variety of ages will be more socially skilled than a child who pretty much only knows how to interact with others the same age.

-the social atmosphere at home and in the community at large is often better than what is present at school, helping a child to grow up with less peer dependency, less focus on clothes and other superficial, material things, less likely to engage in 'bad' social behaviours

-homeschooled kids can gain more guidance on social behaviour since the adults present can be much more aware of what is going on

*Other*

-spending more time together as a family helps create better bonds, not only between parent and child, but between siblings

-homeschooled children, having more time on their hands, tend to develop good self-starting skills

-flexible scheduling allows for all kinds of great stuff

-more time for kids to be kids, which means their lives are less stressful

-more time for extra-curricular activities

-parents get to be the primary caregivers for more than just a few years

My Top Ten:

1. More individual time with the teacher.

2. More time to focus on the child's interests.

3. We can work at a pace appropriate to our child.  Faster or slower depending on the subject & child.

4. Freedom to enjoy a greater variety and frequency of educational outings (field trips).

5. More opportunities to socialize with a variety of people of different ages & backgrounds.

6. Peer pressure?  What peer pressure?

7. More time to develop close family bonds.

8. More time to experience the value of volunteering in the community.

9. The option to use a curriculum that is beneficial to the individual child.

10. Learning is not limited to 8 hours a day, 5 days a week in a classroom full of other children.
