What are the benefits of a DI box?

I don't have great technical knowledge (as you can probably tell). I play keyboard in a band, and don't have a DI box. Usually, when we gig, the sound technicians have one I can use.

Any venue worth playing will have enough for a decent sized band.

You might want to buy one if you worry about reliability or where to plug the jack into.

I wouldn't bother.  If you have a few different output leads you may want to buy a small mixer which can also be useful for recordings with just a few tracks.  The Behringer Eurorack UB802 is good enough.

Alternatively if you don't have a decent reverb or fx rack I would buy one of those instead.
