What are the benefits of deeper Grooves in a golf club (wedge)?

I have a junk Ram pitching wedge that has a worn away face and a wilson 55degree sand wedge I dont use. I was going to put the grooves back on the pitching wedge, but then going to deepen the groves in the sand wedge?

Sine I only use a pitching wedge and a 60 degree I have been trying to work the 55degree back into my bag, but it just does not get it done for me, so I figured instead of buying a new club I would tinker with the grooves.

What is the effect this would have on my clubs?

Would it give me more loft, more feel?

Or is it a waste of time?

  1. i am 15 i have a 15 hadicap and i get new wedges every year because of the wearness and the back spin wears of

  2. No benefit to deeper grooves at all......Its the sharpness of the groove edges that make a ball spin....not the grooves depth.

My wedges get replaced on an annual basis.  I play everyday.

  3. My hubby is a pro golfer and I've heard him say that the grooves help to put more spin on the ball therefore making it easier to stop the ball on the greens, etc.

  4. You need to have it done by the golf pro, they need to conform to the rules or you would be disqualified in a tournament, if you don't play tournament golf cut them your self but they won't act right I'd bet. They add more back spin to the ball and they have square and U-shaped grooves for softer landings.
